    South Carolina Maritime Heritage Foundation A public non-profit organization founded in 2000 to revive interest in the state's important maritime history. Hosts an annual maritime festival with varied events and engages in ongoing outreach projects.
  • The Charleston Museum
    Founded in 1773, this is America's First Museum. its mission is to preserve and interpret the cultural and natural history of Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Located downtown across from the Visitor Center.
Performing Arts
  • Charleston Ballet Theatre
    Professional dance company recognized for an eclectic repertory of modern and classical works by renowned choreographers. Since 1978, under the direction of Don and Patricia Cantwell. Performs everything from classical to contemporary at various locations.
  • Charleston Symphony Orchestra
    Conducted by David Stahl, the symphony runs October through April. Features master works series, pops series, chamber series, and holiday concerts. Filling the Lowcountry with classical music for over 70 years.
Events
  • Cooper River Bridge Run
    An annual 10,000 meter run, sanctioned by USA Track and Field held in the cities of Mount Pleasant and Charleston on the first Saturday in April. One of the world's largest races, with the 2006 event drawing 50,000 runners and 17,000 walkers.
  • Spoleto Festival
    A seventeen day long festival in Charleston, South Carolina offering opera, music theater, dance and special events. From the opening ceremonies on the steps of The Old Exchange to the closing finale at Middleton Plantation, the historic city is awash in song and dance and art shows.
Recreation and Leisure
  • The South Carolina Aquarium
    The new aquarium located on Charleston's harbor depicts the aquatic habitats of the state from rushing mountain streams through rivers, lakes and the salt marsh, to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, encounters with river otters, snakes, turtles, birds, fish and sharks delight guests as they explore 60 living exhibits.
